In the heart of Suburban Square in Ardmore, you’ll find a gallery that feels less like a showroom and more like a living, breathing celebration of creative talent. Axiom Contemporary Gallery, co-owned by Mark Matkevich, has become a vibrant hub for contemporary art, an extension of Mark’s passion, his journey, and his mission to champion artists every step of the way but Axiom’s story starts long before Ardmore.
From Theater to Art: A New Creative Calling
Before Mark was a gallery owner, he was an actor. After graduating from Temple University as a theater major, he headed to Los Angeles, where he spent more than a decade working in film and television. Acting was his world, until one day, he felt ready for something different. Something he could pour himself into with renewed purpose. Something that sparked a new kind of passion. That spark turned out to be art.
Mark began working in a gallery, getting a firsthand look at the inner workings of the art world. He quickly discovered not just an appreciation for the work on the walls, but a deeper love for the artists behind it including their stories, their process, and their need for real advocates. By 2011, he had teamed up with his business partner to launch Axiom Contemporary Gallery in Santa Monica. What started as one space quickly grew into something far greater.
A Gallery Rooted in Purpose
Axiom Contemporary Gallery is now a pop-contemporary gallery representing emerging and mid-career artists, creatives Mark and his team genuinely believe in. Their model is simple, but rare in the industry: a true 50/50 partnership, with no fees charged to artists. Axiom Contemporary Gallery only represents those they are deeply passionate about, and their mission is unwavering which is to help artists grow, succeed, and reach collectors and collections that can transform their careers.
For over a decade, Axiom Contemporary Gallery has expanded far beyond its original West Coast roots. After Santa Monica came an exciting chapter in Old City, Philadelphia. Then, about a year ago, Mark moved the gallery to its current home in Ardmore, right in the center of the thriving Suburban Square. Axiom Contemporary Gallery also moved their Santa Monica location to Phoenix, giving their artists even broader visibility.
Bringing Artists to the World Stage
Axiom Contemporary Gallery's reach doesn’t stop at its brick-and-mortar spaces. The gallery showcases artists at some of the most important art fairs in the world, including:
Art Basel Miami
Aspen Art Fair
Hamptons Fine Art Fair
These events open doors for artists. Doors to private collectors, corporate collections, and institutions that can elevate an artist’s career in ways that last a lifetime. For Mark, this is the heart of the work: being an artist advocate. Helping artists grow. Championing their stories. Guiding their careers. Showing their work to the world with pride, confidence, and genuine belief.
Axiom Contemporary Gallery in Ardmore: A New Creative Home
In Ardmore, Axiom Contemporary Gallery has found the perfect setting in a dynamic, walkable community filled with energy, culture, and people who appreciate creativity. The gallery brings something fresh and expressive to Suburban Square, inviting visitors to experience the kind of art that reflects today’s cultural pulse. Whether you’re an established collector, a first-time buyer, or someone who simply loves being around creativity, Axiom Contemporary Gallery offers a space to discover artists who are shaping the future of contemporary art.

A Story Still Being Written
Mark’s journey from actor to gallery owner and from LA to Ardmore has been anything but linear and that’s what makes Axiom Contemporary Gallery so special. It’s built on passion, reinvention, partnership, and an unwavering commitment to the artists who make the world more beautiful, thought-provoking, and alive.
As Axiom continues to grow, one thing remains clear: this is a gallery with heart, purpose, and a gallery led by someone who believes, deeply, in the talent he represents. Axiom Contemporary Gallery isn’t just about displaying art, it’s about lifting artists up and that’s the most powerful canvas of all.
